Supported by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation

Carlos Noronha Feio is an artist who weaves his own national identity with others he encounters. His work is engaged with the points at which geography and migration meet and where different cultures collide, interfere and impose their own imperatives on each other.

War rugs have a long history in Afghanistan, revived significantly at the time of the Russian occupation a generation ago and given a renewed life after the American and British forces deposed the Taliban regime. Inspired by them, Carlos works with carpet weavers in Arraiolos in his native Portugal creating a cross cultural series of rugs that metaphorically create a common future to both cultures.

The weavers only use local traditional methods of production. These express a similar cultural background with those found in Afghanistan. The image above features in the forthcoming book 'The art of not making - the artist, artisan relationship' by Michael Petry. The exhibition comprises Carlos' latest work - this single, giant rug fills the gallery. A collaborative sound piece by Carlos Noronha Feio and Ergo Phizmiz creates a soundtrack to the exhibition by reflecting on the several layers of meaning implied in the rug.
