Education

Assistant Director Simon Richey

Within the education theme, the Foundation continues to support educational innovations and developments. In 2008, its two programmes are as follows:

Human Scale Schools
This programme is designed to help secondary schools strengthen their commitment to human scale education. In the third and final year of inviting applications from schools, the Foundation will be offering grants of up to £15,000 to those secondary schools that are part, or are due to be part, of the Government’s Building Schools for the Future (BSF) initiative. Specifically, we will assist schools that wish to use this opportunity to create human scale learning communities for the future and in particular ‘schools within schools’. Grant aid will cover the costs including for staff time to allow for reflection, consultation and planning as well as visits to other schools in the UK to learn from effective practice. Grant aid may be available to cover the costs of short-term visits by two members of staff per school to relevant projects in the USA or Europe. Please note that grants will not be awarded to cover capital costs.

Applicants should request a Human Scale Schools pack with further information about this programme before applying.

Cross-cultural Schools and Youth Work Projects
Support is offered to secondary schools, and to those agencies who work with them, to implement imaginatively and ambitiously that part of the KS3 curriculum designed to encourage empathy and understanding between students from different cultures, both within and between schools (i.e. inter-school linking projects, involvement of local community groups etc.). Applications should indicate how the work in question will be disseminated for the benefit of other schools. Support is also offered to youth organisations, and those agencies who work with them, wishing to initiate projects aimed at fostering better relations between young people from different cultures and faiths.
