This book is the first dedicated history and evocation of the royal town of Sintra in Portugal, which Byron, who loved it above most other places, dubbed 'a glorious Eden'. The town is rich in history, long associated with the Portuguese royal family, and a place of exile and repose for many exiled crowns and sceptres. It has magnificent natural scenery, its southern alpine setting and its view over a great ocean: a cool sanctuary from modern urban life both for monarchy and for the common man. Sintra: A Glorious Eden evokes the magic of the royal town, at the same time providing the reader with the historical and literary background to what has become a symbol of Portuguese Romanticism at home and abroad. It combines the genre of travel writing with the history and romantic legacy of Portugal.

MALCOLM JACK was born in England. He spent his early childhood in Hong Kong and has been a regular visitor to Portugal for twenty years. He has written about eighteenth-century philosophy and literature and edited the works of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu and William Beckford.
