A night of free music in London’s Hoxton Square

Wednesday 30 September 2009
from 7.30pm

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation brings free music to London’s Hoxton Square. On Wednesday 30 September the Foundation, in partnership with Shoreditch Trust, is hosting an evening of varied and vibrant musical events for the neighbourhood in local bars and cafés to celebrate its move from West to East End and a new chapter in its history.

The evening, which starts at 7.45pm, will include Cameroonian singer/songwriter, Munto Valdo; stunning and innovative Brazilian percussionist, Adriano Adewale; Portuguese talents, singer Lula Pena and guitarist, Norberto Lobo; the fusion of soul, jazz and latin from the CK Gospel Choir; Nick Mulvey of the Portico Quartet and singer/guitarist, Jamie Woon.

In the summer of 2009 the Gulbenkian Foundation moved to a new purpose-designed office in Hoxton Square. The modern building provides not just a space to work but a meeting place for exploring issues and exchanging views.

“As part of our overriding aim of helping to enrich and connect the experiences of individuals in the UK and Ireland, we are keen that we ourselves connect with outside organisations and others and for their voices to be heard through our work,” said Andrew Barnett, Director of Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in the UK.

“There are few better places to do this than in the Hoxton/Shoreditch area which lies at the heart of a good deal of the capital’s social, cultural and educational activity. The evening’s entertainment reflects our interests in exploring issues of cultural understanding and is a mark of our desire to participate fully in our neighbourhood.”
