Clore Social Fellows for 2012

47 SOCIAL LEADERS IDENTIFIED BY CLORE SOCIAL LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME

The Clore Social Leadership Programme announced today the appointment of seventeen new Clore Social Fellows for 2012. The Programme, in its third year, seeks to identify, connect and develop future leaders of the social sector. The Fellowship now numbers 47 Clore Social Fellows in total, making a significant contribution at a time when the challenges for charities, social enterprises and community organisations have never been greater. It is now more important than ever to recognise and invest in social leaders.

Dame Mary Marsh, Founding Director of the Clore Social Leadership Programme, said today:

"Social purpose organisations need confident, capable and innovative leadership. There could not be a more significant time to ensure that we secure this. We have found a further exceptional group of diverse and highly talented people to join the Fellowship in 2012. They have made an impact in the social sector already and all have considerable potential.

Thanks to the generosity of our funders, they are able to take up this vital investment in their further leadership capability and wider contribution to the sector. The existing Clore Social Fellows, appointed in the previous two years, have demonstrated very powerfully how to make the most of the opportunities that the Programme can provide."

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation has been involved in the Programme from its establishment, providing office space to the Programme's management team for the first two years and sponsoring specialist Gulbenkian Fellows with a particular interest in one of our main areas of work. Last year, we supported Mark Richardson - Business Development Manager at Dwyfor Coffee - in the area of multiple needs and exclusions, one of the core focuses of our Fulfilling Potential aim.

This year, we will be supporting Omar Kahn, currently Head of Policy at the Runnymede Trust - the UK's leading independent race equality think tank - as specialist Gulbenkian Fellow in the area of migration and transnational families and communities.

Omar's commitment to social justice and race equality is personal, intellectual and professional. His parents were both immigrants to the United States, leaving from Ireland and Pakistan respectively to seek a better life. Omar completed a doctorate in political theory, but then took a conscious decision not to stay in academia, knowing he wanted to work with others and to increase his breadth. His ambition is to combine his personal commitment and intellectual training with the practical thinking and leadership skills gained at Runnymede to help eliminate racial disadvantage in the UK and Europe.

Additionally, the Programme has attracted funding from a wide range of Foundations and Trusts and corporate partners, building on the core investment by the Clore Duffield Foundation. Other funders for 2012 are Deloitte, HSBC, the Monument Trust, NESTA, Pears Foundation, Paul Hamlyn Foundation, Resolution Trust, RNIB and Standard Life.
